Turn off the central heating

Switch the heating off a couple of hours before removing the radiator in order for the water to cool.

Close off the Valves Either Side of the Radiator

On one side of the radiator will be the valve used to control the temperature of the radiator. Turn this to the off position. Now go to the valve at the other side of the radiator. There may be a plastic cap covering this valve. Undo the screw and remove the plastic cap that covers the valve. Now, using an adjustable spanner, close the valve, counting how many turns, so you know how many times to turn it back on later.

Drain the Water

Open the valve of the radiator at the bottom and slowly drain the water out into a container. Some radiators have a drain valve attached to one of the valves. Use an adjustable spanner to open this.

The water would have created a vacuum so you need to open the bleed valve at the top, this will let air into the radiator and the water will start flowing again. Do the same on the other side of the radiator.

Then take the whole radiator away from the wall and empty the last of the water down into the toilet bowl.

Cap off the Valve

Put the brass cap and rubber washer onto the pipe feeds after you have drained the radiator. Tighten them so there is no chance that any water will escape.

Then poor some non acidic cleaner in to the radiators to flush them. This should help keep the system clean for a few years. if problems still persist your system is in need of a power flush.
